Instagram's ranking system is not one formula. Different parts of the app, such as Reels, the feed and Explore, rank content differently. Still, Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, has named three signals that carry a lot of weight across the app: watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. Many marketing blogs attach exact multipliers to these. Those numbers are not published by Instagram, so use the direction and not the decimals.

Watch time

This is how long people actually watch, including replays. A Reel that is watched to the end, or replayed, tells Instagram it held attention. To improve it:

  • Open with the payoff or a clear promise in the first second or two.
  • Cut dead air, filler words and long pauses.
  • Use a loop: end on a line that flows back into the beginning.
  • Match the length to the idea. Short Reels are not automatically better.

Likes per reach

The key phrase is "per reach". It is the share of viewers who liked the video, not the total number of likes. A smaller account with a high ratio can beat a large account with a low one. Make content that your actual audience wants, not content aimed at everyone.

Sends per reach

A send is when someone shares your Reel with a friend in a message. Instagram treats this as a strong signal, and it is especially useful for reaching people who do not follow you yet. Content that gets sent is usually useful, funny or relatable enough that someone thinks, "this is for you." Ask yourself before posting: who would I send this to, and why?

Saves still help

Saves show that people want to come back to something. Checklists, step-by-step demos, recipes, templates and short tutorials earn saves more than pure entertainment.

A simple Reels formula

  1. Hook: a clear promise on screen and in your first words.
  2. Value: deliver it quickly, with on-screen text for people watching without sound.
  3. Prompt: invite a send or save in a natural way, such as "send this to someone who needs it".
  4. Caption: say what the video is about in plain words so Instagram can place it.

Check your own numbers

Open your insights for each Reel and compare average watch time, shares and saves. The patterns on your account are more reliable than any rule of thumb. Keep what works, drop what does not, and see our follower growth strategies for the broader plan.

What panels can and cannot do

Instagram ranks content on how real viewers react, so purchased activity cannot replace a good Reel. Some people use gradual, small orders to make a new profile look established to visitors. If you try it, test with a minimum quantity, read the service card carefully and understand the risks covered in are SMM panels safe.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most important Instagram ranking signals?

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has pointed to watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. Exact weights are not published, so treat figures like "three times more than likes" as unconfirmed.

What does "per reach" mean?

It is a ratio. A video that gets a high share of the people who saw it to like or send it signals quality, regardless of how many people saw it in total.

Do hashtags still matter?

They help describe your content, but clear captions, on-screen text and spoken keywords matter at least as much. A few relevant tags are enough.
